Hi everybody!

Na een week in Ghana weer even een update van het werk hier!

Het was erg leuk de stand van zaken van mijn onderzoek, en de bachelor scripties van de studenten van Inholland afgelopen maandag te presenteren aan de YHFG staff. Ze waren geïnteresseerd en stelden interessante en kritische vragen. Onder andere de aanbevelingen die Communicatie student Eline heeft gedaan m.b.t. het thematisch opbouwen van het lesprogramma, het gebruik van actieve werkvormen en te starten met de persoonlijke ontwikkeling en het zelfbeeld van jongeren. Dat ontbreekt momenteel in het lesprogramma. Daarnaast bleek uit het onderzoek van Communicatie student Nicole dat jongeren het heel erg moeilijk vinden om hun mening te vormen en deze te verwoorden. De voorlichters bij YHFG (Ghanezen en Europese vrijwilligers) moeten een leerproces gaan ondersteunen waarbij de leerlingen kennis en vaardigheden leren op het gebied van seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid. Er ligt nu nog te veel nadruk op het overdragen van informatie.

Deze week ben ik 's avonds het centrum in gegaan voor het veldonderzoek. Ik heb bij twee groepen jongens ongeveer een uur gezeten en gesproken over relaties voor het huwelijk. Ze waren erg open, dus voor mijn onderzoek was het een succes!

Verder ben ik deze week met de social worker van YHFG mee geweest. Zij geeft les over seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid op scholen. Het was leuk en goed om te zien hoe zij dit aanpakt. We komen aan op scholen waar het meestal een chaos is en waar de jongeren niet in de klas op haar zitten te wachten. Zij loopt alle klassen in om ze te verzamelen, ze zorgt dat de jongens die ongeïnteresseerd achterin zitten voorin komen zitten en ze krijgt het voor elkaar dat iedereen meedoet en luistert. Helaas krijgt ze niet veel tijd van de scholen momenteel om de lessen te geven. Er worden speciale lessen georganiseerd waar de leerlingen ineens naar toe moeten, of er zijn sportprogramma’s waardoor de social worker regelmatig voor niets naar een school komt. Er wordt momenteel geïnvesteerd in het contact met de scholen zodat dit in de toekomst beter wordt gefaciliteerd.

De komende dagen ga ik op zoek naar meisjes om mee te praten. Dat is moeilijker, die zitten op school of thuis. Ik hoop na een les van de social worker op de scholen wat meiden te spreken!

Hi everybody,

After a week in Ghana, hereby an update of my work so far!

It was very nice to present the actual situation of my research project, and the bachelor thesis’s of the students of Inholland University last Monday to the YHFG staff. They were interested and asked interesting and critical questions. We discussed the recommendation of Communication student Eline concerning the thematic structure the educational programme, using active methods in class and starting the programme with the personal development and self esteem. This is now missing in the programme. Besides, it became clear from the research of Communication student Nicole that youth find it very difficult to form and express their opinion. The educators at YHFG (both Ghanaians and European volunteers) should support a learning process in where they teach students knowledge and skills regarding sexual and reproductive health. At this moment there is a focus on transferring knowledge.

This week I went to town in the evening for my field research. I sat with two groups of guys for about 1 hour and spoke and discussed with them the topic relationships before marriage. They were very open, so for my research this was a success!

Next to that, this week I went with the Social Worker of YHFG to the sexual and reproductive health lessons she carries out on school. It was interesting and good to see her approach. When we arrived at the school, most of the time it was chaotic and the students where not waiting for her in the class room. She had to gather them herself, she took care that the guys with an uninteresting attitude shifted from the back of the class room to the front, and she managed it that everybody was paying attention. Unfortunately she didn’t get much time for her lessons. Sometimes special lessons are organized were students need to go to, or there are sports programmes. At this moment YHFG is investing again and more in the contacts with the schools to improve the facilitation of the lessons at the schools.

The next coming days I will try to find girl to talk to. That is difficult somehow, because they go to school or are at home. I hope to talk to some girl after a lesson of the social worker at the schools!
